GovernanceAlive

Website evaluation and redesign to improve usability and clarify service offerings

Duration: 3 months

Deliverable Format: Prototype

Prompt

Provide evidence-based recommendations on design improvements to highly trafficked webpages.

Problem

GovernanceAlive is a small but mighty team that received indirect feedback about their website and its functionality. They are hoping to connect with users to redesign key pages on their website.

Goal

Research and design recommendations for immediate website design and functionality improvements, along with a backlog of potential topics they can implement down the line.

Research + Define

Heuristic Evaluation

Problems found in this evaluation were rated on a scale of 0 (no issues) to 4 (usability catastrophe).

Top Heuristics of Concern:

  1. Consistency and Standards: 4

  2. Recognition Rather than Recall: 3

  3. Aesthetic and Minimalist Design: 3

User Surveys

Participants: 10

Age: 45+

Career/Industry: Nonprofits

Participants were employees or potential employees, not clients.

User Personas + Stories

Based on the information gathered through surveys, personas were created to discuss characteristics, goals and frustrations of potential users.

User stories were created to explore each goal/frustration from the personas, and any possible design functionality to fulfill them.

In order to begin this project, I needed to familiarize myself with GovernanceAlive’s website and their services.

Initial Impressions of Website:

“The design feels a little clunky and out-of-date--could use a more modern, clean, organized feel from the perspective of the potential client.”

“Give more of a sense of how the consulting or trainings work (in person? online? cost?). How does one register?”

“I experience the home page as too busy - too many details rather than doorways into other pages with more information.”

Testing + Analysis

User Testing

Testing Task Scenarios:

  1. You work at an organization and are looking for dynamic governance services for your company. You need clear information about training so you can clarify expectations with your employer.

  2. You recently learned about dynamic governance and are interested in what being a facilitator looks like. You are interested in the scope of the training, and want to know more about the certification process and its benefits.

  3. You are utilizing GovernanceAlive for information and resources. You are interested in learning more about the company as well as general information regarding sociocracy and dynamic governance.

Based on the feedback from initial user interviews, user testing was necessary to pinpoint main areas of potential improvements.

Design

First, wireframes were designed to address the main concerns found in testing. After reviewing with the team, clickable prototypes were created.

Pages Addressed:
